The syllabus for the course can be found below. Schedules, enclosed in the downloadable versions of syllabus of each section can be found at the bottom of this page.
Recording of Remote Class:
Students who participate in this class with their camera on or use a profile image are agreeing to have their video or image recorded solely for the purpose of creating a record for students enrolled in the class to refer to, including those enrolled students who are unable to attend live. If you are unwilling to consent to have your profile or video image recorded, be sure to keep your camera off and do not use a profile image. Likewise, students who un-mute during class and participate orally are agreeing to have their voices recorded. If you are not willing to consent to have your voice recorded during class, you will need to keep your mute button activated and communicate exclusively using the “chat” feature, which allows students to type questions and comments live.
Grading Policy:
Final letter grades assigned based on https://www.york.cuny.edu/academics/policies/grading-policies

Homework & Lab Reports:
Laboratory exercises will be conducted in class on the dates indicated on the syllabus. Because we are in hybrid mode this semester, we will try to keep up with the schedule as much as possible and make the labs happen on the dates they’re supposed to. The completed write-up of these assignments will be due 10 days after each lab is conducted. I have posted the lab manual for this course on Blackboard and the course website. I strongly encourage you to read the lab instructions prior to coming to class. This will help you to identify any areas that you do not understand, to ask for help and to make the most efficient use of your time.
Homework assignments are due on the dates indicated on the syllabus. Assignments should be submitted via Blackboard. Homework may be completed alone or in collaboration with your classmates.
If you collaborate with your classmates to finish any assignment of the class, please make sure that you come up with your own version of the answer. Identical answers to any assignment will be considered as an offense to the College’s guidelines on academic integrity and the minimum penalty is to receive 0 on said assignment.
To provide direct experience with the night sky, this course includes a night lab. Because our class time is during the daytime, this night lab will be conducted as a remote lab. The details of the remote version of the night lab can be found on the Lab page in the course website. It is left for you as a homework assignment, due on the last day of class (Dec 13). Although you can finish all the assignments on your computer, it is strongly recommended that you do it on a clear night looking out to the actual night sky.
Late assignments will not be accepted for this class unless it’s under exceptional circumstances. If you have any valid reasons to turn in any work late, please contact me prior to the due date of the assignment.
Other Class Activities:
There will be some class activities that require group discussions or other forms of participations. Details to come later.
Assessment:
The only assessment of the course will be a final presentation. Details to come later on in the semester.
Attendance Policy:
As this course has a strong laboratory component, students are required to attend consistently. Attendance will be taken during each class meeting. Any student who fails to attend one of the lab sections will receive a zero for the day’s lab activity. Unexcused absences from class will count against the student’s final class grade.
Each student will be entitled to two excused absences over the course of the semester. Any student who needs to miss class must inform their instructor in advance, and your absence for the day, including any missed laboratory assignments, will be excused. Medical emergencies may be reported after the fact, provided they are accompanied by appropriate documentation. Homework assignments and lab reports that are due on the date of an excused absence must be turned in upon the student’s return to class.
Academic Integrity:
This course conforms to the York College standards for academic honesty. Any student suspected of violating the integrity policy will have the opportunity to discuss the incident in question with their professor. Students found to be in violation of the policy will receive, at a minimum, a zero on the assignment in question. More serious or repeated violations will incur additional penalties.
